AP II Meets with ICAO to Discuss the Current Condition of the Aviation World, from Recovery, Efficiency to Environmental Problems

Jakarta - PT Angkasa Pura II, the manager of 20 airports in Indonesia, and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) held a meeting at ICAO's head office in Montreal, Canada, on November 3, 2022 local time.

The meeting was attended by AP II President Director Muhammad Awaluddin, as well as ICAO's Director of Air Transport Bureau Mohamed Rahma, Deputy Director of Air Transport Bureau Jane Hupe and Chief Economic Policy Section of Air Transport Bureau Peter Alawani.

AP II President Director Muhammad Awaluddin said, "The AP II and ICAO meeting is in line with the spirit of the G20 Aviation Dialogue in Bali which was attended by the Indonesian Minister of Transportation and the President of ICAO. We want the AP II program to always be relevant to the global aviation industry. Moreover, Indonesia is projected to become the 4th largest air transportation market in the world by 2036.”

Director of Air Transport Bureau ICAO Mohamed Rahma said that global aviation recovery requires support from all parties. "We support AP II's initiatives in flight recovery efforts, as well as in implementing a green airport in line with the long-term aviation goal (LTAG), which includes setting net-zero emissions carbon by 2050."

The AP II and ICAO meeting discussed three important aspects, namely aviation industry recovery, airport operation excellence and strategic airport programs in the future.

Aviation Industry Recovery
During the meeting, Muhammad Awaluddin delivered three AP II programs to recover from the pressures of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The first program is to focus on portfolio management to have a significant impact on company performance.

"AP II has made progress in reviewing its business portfolio, assets and infrastructure to determine which ones have a major impact on the company and it will be more optimal if we make changes to the structure, including collaborating with strategic partners," said Muhammad Awaluddin.

Related to this program, AP II carries out asset optimization on brown field assets; asset acceleration on assets under construction; and asset utilization on green field assets.

AP II's second program to recover from the pressures of the pandemic is to explore various business models (reinventing business models), such as the one implemented at Kualanamu Airport where AP II partners with global partners to accelerate airport development.

AP II also conveyed the third program in an effort to encourage recovery, namely updating infrastructure to develop smart airports (renewing infrastructure towards smart airports), among others by building a digital culture, developing automation facilities and utilizing the latest technology.

Meanwhile, the Chief Economic Policy Section of the Air Transport Bureau, Peter Alawani, said that the recovery of flights amidst the pressures of this pandemic can be encouraged with the cooperation of all parties and various innovations or unusual efforts.

Strategic Airport Program in the Future
To ICAO, AP II also conveyed the Eco-Airport master plan 2021 - 2025 to utilize PLTS with a total capacity of 26.34 MWp in 2025.

"The use of new and renewable energy to support net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 in the global aviation industry is also a concern of the Indonesian Minister of Transportation, who encourages the growth of an environmentally friendly global civil aviation sector," explained Muhammad Awaluddin.

Deputy Director of Air Transport Bureau ICAO Jane Hupe said that airports can take advantage of renewable energy through the application of solar panels for PLTS, then wind turbine and geothermal technology.

In the last 10 years, the Airport Carbon Accreditation Program has been running, which was attended by 288 airports around the world. Soekarno-Hatta Airport itself has received mapping accreditation in this program.

“288 airports are involved in this program and 61 airports are now carbon neutral. We hope that by 2030 there will be 100 airports that are carbon neutral,” said Jane Hupe.

Airport Operation Excellence
In a meeting with ICAO, Muhammad Awaluddin then conveyed AP II's initiative in encouraging flight optimization through Airport Collaborative Decision Making (A-CDM) through the Airport Operation Control Center (AOCC) facility at Soekarno-Hatta Airport.

“A-CDM allows each stakeholder to more clearly know the expectations of other stakeholders. Collaboration is getting closer among stakeholders so that the departure and arrival processes of passengers and planes are more optimal to improve customer experience, operational efficiency, and lead to business performance, "said Muhammad Awaluddin.
