Amid Global Aviation Recovery, Soekarno-Hatta Airport is the 8th Busiest in the World

By the end of 2022 Soekarno-Hatta Airport is projected to serve 271,075 flights

Jakarta - Soekarno-Hatta Airport is listed as the 8th busiest airport in the world, showing a strong recovery of national aviation traffic amid the pandemic.

Sweden-based FlightsFrom.com released a list of the world's 100 busiest airports based on flight departure times, using the most recent data as of October 21, 2022.

Based on this data, Soekarno-Hatta Airport has a scheduled flight departure of 535 flights every day, placing the largest airport in Indonesia in the 8th position in the world, 3rd in Asia and 1st in the ASEAN region.

PT Angkasa Pura II President Director Muhammad Awaluddin said this data shows the recovery of flight traffic at Soekarno-Hatta Airport is on the right track and AP II as the airport operator is able to properly accommodate the growing demand for flights.

"The close collaboration between AP II and all stakeholders, as well as thanks to the support of regulators, has made the public's trust in the national aviation sector maintained in the midst of the pandemic. This also encourages the recovery of flight traffic at AP II airports, especially Soekarno-Hatta Airport which is the largest airport in Indonesia, and allows the national aviation sector to optimally support the handling of the pandemic and the recovery of the national economy."

"The restoration of flight traffic at Soekarno-Hatta Airport will begin in December 2021, and currently the recovery rate at Soekarno-Hatta Airport has reached 80%, indicating that flight movements have reached 80% of 2019 conditions when there was no pandemic. AP II and stakeholders are able to accommodate the growing demand for flights while still prioritizing aspects of service, safety, security and the application of health protocols," said Muhammad Awaluddin.

Furthermore, Muhammad Awaluddin said that the very large domestic flight market in Indonesia also supports the acceleration of the recovery of flight traffic at Soekarno-Hatta Airport.

Based on data released by FlightsFrom.com, the 5 busiest domestic routes from Soekarno-Hatta Airport are to Denpasar (52-58 flights/day), Surabaya (40-42 flights/day), Medan (39-40 flights/day), Ujung Pandang (32-34 flights/day) and Pontianak (25-27 flights/day).

Meanwhile the 5 busiest international routes are to Singapore (13-15 flights/day), Kuala Lumpur (9-10 flights/day), Jeddah (3-5 flights/day), Doha (3 flights/day) and Narita Tokyo ( 2-3 flights/day).

As for the period January - September 2022, the number of aircraft movements at Soekarno-Hatta Airport reached 197,127 flights, and by the end of the year it is estimated that aircraft movements could be 271,075 flights. The increase in flights in the fourth quarter of 2022 (October - December 2022) is driven by the 2022 and 2021 Christmas holidays.
