Kualanamu Airport Towards International Hub

Witnessed by the Minister of SOEs and the Minister of Transportation, AP II and its subsidiary, APA, signed the Kualanamu Airport operating document

Jakarta - Located in Sarinah which is known as The Window of Indonesia, on Thursday 7 July 2022 the 'Kualanamu Airport Towards an International Hub' event will be held.

As part of the event, PT Angkasa Pura II (AP II) and its subsidiary, PT Angkasa Pura Aviasi (APA) signed commercial operational documents for Kualanamu Airport.

The signing was carried out by AP II President Director Muhammad Awaluddin and APA President Director Ahmad Rifai.

In line with this, Kualanamu Airport is officially managed by APA whose majority shares are owned by AP II. Also a shareholder in APA is the GMR Group consortium (GMR and Aeroport de Paris).

Minister of SOEs Erick Thohir and Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi also witnessed the signing session of the commercial operational document for Kualanamu Airport.

SOE Minister Erick Thohir said the management of Kualanamu Airport by APA is part of efforts to improve the transportation ecosystem, not only human mobility but also supply chains.

The management of Kualanamu Airport by APA, explained the Minister of SOEs, made Kualanamu Airport an international hub to encourage North Sumatra as a tourism and cargo center.

“Pak Budi (Minister of Transportation) and I are serious about improving the supply chain. The collaboration (at Kualanamu Airport) is a collaboration where we emphasize how important it is for us to encourage North Sumatra as a new center for Indonesia's economic growth."

"This is also an opportunity for Indonesia to build a new market. South to south trade is very potential. This cooperation allows us to have direct access between Indonesia and India. Indonesia's trade relations with India are very good. GMR India in collaboration with AP II will drive higher traffic to Indonesia. North Sumatra will become the hub," said the Minister of SOEs.

Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi appreciated the partnership steps taken by AP II with APA. According to him, through this partnership, it is hoped that in the future Kualanamu Airport will be more competitive and become an international hub to support North Sumatra as a tourism and cargo center.

"This is a form of government consistency in carrying out creative funding for the infrastructure and facilities it has. We must invite as much private participation as possible outside and within the country to participate in building it. Through this partnership, we want passenger and goods traffic at the airport Kualanamu is increasing," said the Minister of Transportation.

Deputy Governor of North Sumatra Musa Rajekshah said that the management of Kualanamu Airport by APA can support the economy in North Sumatra.

"The construction of Kualanamu Airport will absorb a lot of workers. Kualanamu Airport will bring as much new international traffic as possible to visit the North Sumatra region, visit tourism places in North Sumatra and God willing, it will definitely revive the North Sumatran economy, "explained the Deputy Governor of North Sumatra.

International flights
In the same place, President Director of AP II Muhammad Awaluddin said that by the end of the year it is targeted that Kualanamu Airport will open seven international flight routes to and from South Asia.

"In the next 5 years, Kualanamu Airport will serve 40% of international flights or an increase compared to currently only 10% of international flights."

Furthermore, Muhammad Awaluddin said APA will develop Kualanamu Airport with the Airport City concept that integrates the needs of passengers, cargo and the role of the airport as an international hub.

"The capacity of the passenger terminal has been increased to a maximum of 65 million passengers, from currently around 8 million passengers per year. In addition, an area of ​​200 hectares is prepared for the construction of a commercial area," said Muhammad Awaluddin.

The 200-hectare commercial land will be developed for development including convention center, factory outlet, F&B area, kids edutainment, golf course, hypermarket, hotel, apartment, office, theme park and duty free area.

Muhammad Awaluddin added, “All investments come from APA. AP II as the majority shareholder of APA will carry out the supervisory function of operations and development and ensure that Kualanamu Airport can contribute significantly to economic growth and tourism in North Sumatra and more broadly for Indonesia."

The investment funds prepared by APA for the development of Kualanamu Airport can reach Rp. 56 trillion until 2047. In 2047, passenger movements at Kualanamu Airport will reach 54 million passengers with a terminal capacity of 65 million passengers per year.
