Supporting the Utilization of New Renewable Energy, AP II Targets 20 Airports to Use Solar Power Plants by 2025

AP II conveys the Eco Airport master plan at the Renewable Energy webinar in Improving Competitiveness in the Industrial Era 4.0

Jakarta - PT Angkasa Pura II is committed to utilizing new and renewable energy (EBT) in all airports managed by the company.

AP II President Director Muhammad Awaluddin when he was a keynote speaker in the webinar The Role of Renewable Energy in Improving Competitiveness in the Industrial Era 4.0 held by Sriwijaya University on Saturday, February 12, 2022, said that the use of EBT at airports is in line with the agreement between Airport Council International (ACI) and all airport operators in the world to support the global Net Zero Carbon Emission 2050 program.

This webinar was also attended by the Vice Chancellor of Sriwijaya University Prof Zainuddin Nawawi, PhD, Technical Director of the Directorate General of Electricity at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Ir Wanhar, Director of Commerce and Customer Management of PLN Ir Bob Saril, M.Eng.Sc, IPU and Senior EVP of PLN Risk Management Ir. Chairani Rachmatullah, M.Eng.Sc, IPU

"Airports contribute about 2% of carbon emissions from the total global share, so to reduce carbon emissions, airport operators must be committed to using new and renewable energy in almost all aspects of operations and services," said Muhammad Awaluddin.

Muhammad Awaluddin added, "In line with this, AP II instills a spirit of environmental concern in the national aviation industry through the use of EBT, and we want to continue to contribute to environmental conservation efforts."

Furthermore, Muhammad Awaluddin said the use of EBT in the AP II environment strongly supports the implementation of technology in realizing smart airports so as to increase the competitiveness of AP II airports in the Industry 4.0 era.

"AP II already has an Eco Airport development master plan for the period 2021 - 2030, where this Eco Airport supports the company's vision to become a Smart & Connected Airport. Utilization of EBT at AP II airport will use new technologies, which can be integrated with existing technology, "said Muhammad Awaluddin.

As for the Eco Airport masterplan 2021 - 2030, AP II focuses on the use of Solar Power Plants (PLTS) as new renewable energy.

"In the First Phase, which is 2021, the use of EBT has been implemented, namely PLTS (Solar Power Plant) which is installed on the roof of buildings in a number of buildings at Soekarno-Hatta Airport, Kualanamu Airport and Banyuwangi Airport with a capacity of 1.83 MWp (megawatt peak)."

"Then in the Second Phase, this year, it is planned that the use of Rooftop PLTS to reach 3.78 MWp of EBT, and then in the Third Phase, namely 2023-2025, it is planned to use PLTS on the ground (ground mounted) with a capacity of 18.69 MWp and floating PLTS with a capacity of 18.69 MWp. 1.8 MWp. By 2025, it is targeted that all 20 AP II airports have PLTS with a capacity of 26.34 MWp," said Muhammad Awaluddin.

In utilizing NRE, AP II prepares 3 important aspects, namely HR, Process and Technology.

HR aspects are related to electrical engineering competence based on new and renewable energy, then processes related to standard procedures in operating new and renewable energy that are effective and efficient, and technology related to the use of the right platform to operate new and renewable energy.

Regarding the use of electricity technology, AP II has also built a system called MANTRI (Monitoring System of Airport and Non-Airport Threshold Electrical Infrastructure) to control and monitor in real time energy use in the AP II environment.

In the same webinar, PLN's Director of Commerce and Customer Management Bob Saril said the transition to the use of EBT requires the support of all parties.

“In this transition, the cooperation of community components is very important. There is cooperation in terms of regulations, funding issues, as well as technology that must also be supported," he explained.

Meanwhile, Senior EVP of Risk Management at PLN Chairani Rachmatullah said that PLN is targeting the NRE mix of 23% by 2025.

"PLN remains committed that NRE is 23% in 2025," he said.

In this webinar it is also stated that NRE is the cheapest source of electrical energy today.

Muhammad Awaluddin said the use of NRE which was very efficient in terms of cost would greatly help the airport in facing challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic, because electricity is one of the biggest contributors to operational costs at airports.

"The use of technology and advantages in terms of cost makes the use of EBT able to increase the competitiveness of AP II airports in the Industry 4.0 era," explained Muhammad Awaluddin.
