Reflections on 37 Years of AP II, History, Greatest Tests, and Optimism for the Future

Jakarta - PT Angkasa Pura II (Persero) will be 37 years old on August 13, 2021.

The history of the birth of AP II began with the establishment of the Jakarta Cengkareng Airport Perum in 1984.

Jakarta Cengkareng Airport then changed its name to Soekarno-Hatta Airport which in 1985 opened 1 terminal namely Terminal 1. Then, in 1992, the largest airport in Indonesia opened Terminal 2.

In 2016, Terminal 3 was opened where it is the largest and most modern aircraft passenger terminal in Indonesia with an area of ​​more than 400,000 square meters and a capacity of 25 million passengers/year.

As for 2015, the number of airports managed by AP II was 13 airports and then in just 5 years it increased by 7, so that in 2021 at the age of 37, the company manages a total of 20 airports in Sumatra (12 airports), then Java ( 6 airports) and Kalimantan (2 airports).

"Starting from managing Soekarno-Hatta Airport, AP II went through a number of transformation journeys, maintaining consistency to continue to grow with the spirit of collaboration and hard work until now managing 20 airports by continuing to show progress and rapid business improvement in the airport service business," said Muhammad Awaluddin. .

Muhammad Awaluddin said the increase in AP II's business could not be separated from the implementation of the Adjacent Business concept, which means the company creates new markets through new business lines. For example, in the property sector, digital business, to strategic partnerships.

"Through business expansion, AP II does not only depend on the aeronautical business but also has a reliable non-aeronautical business," explained Muhammad Awaluddin.

In line with the development of business, infrastructure and services, AP II airports have received various recognitions. One of them is the continued improvement in the ranking of Soekarno-Hatta Airport in the list of Top 100 World's Best Airports from Skytrax.

In 2016, Soekarno-Hatta Airport was ranked 63rd, then rose to rank 44 (2017), rank 45 (2018), rank 40 (2019), rank 35 (2020), and in 2021 it rose to rank 34.

"It takes only 5 years, Soekarno-Hatta Airport can jump around 30 places to currently be in 34th position. We are sure in the coming years this ranking will continue to improve along with the transformation it undergoes," said Muhammad Awaluddin.

AP II is currently undergoing a digital transformation, namely Transformation 1.0 (2016 - 2020) and currently Transformation 2.0 (2020 - 2024) which takes the theme The Great SHIFT 2024 to focus on making the company more adaptive to global megatrends.

In the midst of the ongoing transformation, AP II is facing the toughest challenge of all time for the global aviation sector: the global COVID-19 pandemic.

"The pandemic is testing AP II's toughness as a company that has been around for 37 years. This anniversary moment is the right time for us to briefly see what we have achieved, reflect on today's position, and ignite a fighting spirit to look to the future in order to maintain the mandate to provide services to the public and maintain Indonesia's air connectivity, "explained Muhammad Awaluddin.

Muhammad Awaluddin added, "Coinciding with this 37th Anniversary, AP II inflamed the spirit of State Service Aviation Synergy, giving the spirit of synergy that has been carried out so far to the entire aviation ecosystem so that they remain optimistic in facing the pandemic to serve the country."

Optimism for the future
AP II itself continues to strengthen organizational resilience in the face of this pandemic, by establishing various procedures including regulating work patterns and norms, protection for the public, business process arrangements and airport facilities.

"As a result, all AP II airports continue to operate well in the midst of the pandemic, serving various flights," said Muhammad Awaluddin.

With a strong organization in the midst of a pandemic, AP II can carry out business recovery programs, including supporting the realization of the Aviation and Tourism BUMN Holding.

"We believe holding Tourism and Supporting SOEs can further strengthen operations and accelerate the recovery of the tourism and aviation sector in Indonesia, of course, by paying attention to all existing regulations. Holding creates a single coordination in the development of the master plan and will maximize the advantages of each holding member in order to accelerate the recovery of the tourism and aviation sectors, "explained Muhammad Awaluddin.

Muhammad Awaluddin said, of course, in the holding, AP II will carry out its role in developing the airport sector by collaborating with other holding members to formulate a comprehensive development strategy, service optimization, and mutually supportive operations.
