PT Angkasa Pura II Begins to Prepare Palembang Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II Airport Welcomes FIFA U-20 World Cup 2021

Jakarta - PT Angkasa Pura II (Persero) is preparing a number of managed airports to fully support the holding of the 2021 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Indonesia.

On Friday, February 4, 2020, PT Angkasa Pura II signed a memorandum of understanding (Memorandum of Understanding / MoU) with the South Sumatra Provincial Government regarding Synergy in Support of Organizing the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2021 at Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II Airport.

The signing of the MoU took place at Griya Agung Palembang, carried out by the Governor of South Sumatra H. Herman Deru and the President Director of PT Angkasa Pura II Muhammad Awaluddin.

As is well known, Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II Airport in Palembang is managed by PT Angkasa Pura II, and Palembang itself is appointed to host this grand world football event.

President Director of PT Angkasa Pura II Muhammad Awaluddin said the MoU was intended so that the two parties could more intensively discuss the potential for cooperation for the success of holding the world cup.

"The things discussed include the provision of hospitality facilities for various parties and of course the contingent of the FIFA U-21 participant team at Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II Airport. As the main gateway to a region, the airport plays an important role in various events including world-class ones such as the world cup. Therefore, we are committed to maintaining Indonesia's good name by providing good hospitality when the participating teams arrive. "

"This MoU also refers to the Presidential Instruction of the Republic of Indonesia Number 8 of 2020 concerning Support for the Implementation of the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2021," said Muhammad Awaluddin.

PT Angkasa Pura II, continued Muhammad Awaluddin, will set up a standby post and sports corner at the airport terminal to welcome this event.

"Palembang will be visited by many tourists, football fans, and of course the FIFA U-20 World Cup contingent, most of whom have set foot first at Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II Airport. Therefore, we will give a good reception and build the atmosphere of the FIFA U-20 World Cup tournament from the airport, ”said Muhammad Awaluddin.

Muhammad Awaluddin said that coordination and collaboration would certainly also be carried out with the National Committee for Organizing the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2021.

The reputation of Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II Airport has gone global along with the implementation of Transformation 1.0 and Transformation 2.0 carried out by PT Angkasa Pura II to improve service and operational standards.

This airport is the winner of the 2019 Airport Service Quality Award held by the Airport Council International (ACI) for the category Best Airport By Size & Region, Best Environment & Ambience, Best Customer Service and Best Infrastructure & Facility, for the airport category 2 - 5 million passengers.

"This indicates that the facilities and services of Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II Airport are one of the best in the world for the category of airports with a capacity of up to 5 million passengers per year, and we will maintain this standard, including welcoming and releasing FIFA U-20 World Cup participants," he said. From the operational side, Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II Airport is equipped with adequate air-side infrastructure.

The runway at this airport has dimensions of 3,000 m x 45 m so it can be used for wide body aircraft such as the Airbus A330, Boeing 777, to Boeing 747.

In addition, the airport also has a light rail transit (LRT) station which is directly connected to Palembang Jakabaring Sport City.

"The existence of this LRT is an added value because it can provide an alternative mode of transportation from Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin Airport to Palembang Jakabaring Sport City, which is the venue for the FIFA U-20 World Cup, so that it can facilitate the journey of spectators, official participants, and various other parties," he explained.
