First in Indonesia, PT Angkasa Pura II Introduces Virtual Reality Training for Airport Personnel

Through VR Training, all conditions can be adjusted for training materials

Jakarta - PT Angkasa Pura II (Persero) through the Airport Learning Center Unit has increased training standards in accelerating the skills of airport personnel.

Today, PT Angkasa Pura II introduced the Airport Digital Expedition Academy which provides the first virtual reality (VR Training) based training in Indonesia for airport personnel. The existence of this academy also confirms the company's Digital Transformation which has been carried out since 4 years ago.

Meanwhile, through virtual reality technology, various scenarios of situations that threaten security and safety at airports can be simulated closer to reality as training materials for personnel.

In the early stages, virtual reality technology-based training was prepared for Aviation Security (Avsec), Apron Movement Control (AMC) personnel, and Aviation Accident Relief and Fire Fighting (PKP-PK).

Avsec, AMC and PKP-PK are the three mandatory operating units at each airport so that an airport can operate with 3S + 1C-based standards and procedures.

President Director of PT Angkasa Pura II Muhammad Awaluddin said that the launch of the Airport Digital Expedition Academy provides various aspects of digital-based training and the first to be implemented is by using virtual reality devices.

Furthermore, said Muhammad Awaluddin, based on a virtual reality-based training research, it was 75% more effective than for example group discussions (50%), demonstrations (30%) and audio-visuals (20%).

“Virtual reality-based training is perfect for seeing the capabilities of airport personnel in a measurable and detailed way. For example, through virtual reality technology it can be easy to carry out passenger profiling and can be effectively simulated, for example for the condition of passengers who look nervous because they are carrying drugs or suspected terrorists who can threaten security, and that must be profiled by Avsec. PKP-PK personnel can also try and measure more precisely what strategies to deal with a related incident that threatens aviation safety at the airport. "

"Training using virtual reality technology is the same for example with pilot training using simulators. We hope that the skills of airport operations personnel will be improved and honed in a sustainable manner, "explained Muhammad Awaluddin.

This virtual reality technology-based training will take up 75% of the total personnel training curriculum, while 25% will still be physically trained.

"In the midst of this pandemic, training based on virtual reality technology is also very appropriate compared to us still fully holding conventional training which requires large numbers of people to gather," explained Muhammad Awaluddin.

The virtual reality devices used in the training of PT Angkasa Pura II personnel are VR headsets, VR-ready computers, VR gloves, gas & break foot pedals and joysticks. The device is also equipped with software or modules for training.

All of the equipment is installed in the Airport Learning Center (ALC) building in the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport area. ALC itself is an educational training center owned by PT Angkasa Pura II to anticipate future changes related to Business Model Variability, Infrastructure / Operation Complexity, and the need for Dynamic Competencies for airport operation personnel.
