Not Only Becoming the Best Airport Operator in Indonesia, Angkasa Pura II is Ready to Go Global

Jakarta - President Joko Widodo when introducing the ranks of ministers in the Advanced Indonesian Cabinet, Wednesday, October 23, 2019, gave the task of SOE Minister Erick Thohir to encourage the expansion of SOEs into the global market.

SOE Minister Erick Thohir also stated that SOEs are not only large in the country.

"We do not want to only be good at home, but also become global players," he said during the handover of the position of Minister of BUMN in the Ministry of BUMN.

In line with this, Angkasa Pura II since the beginning of 2019 has launched Flagship Go Global as part of its business expansion plans and achieved its vision of being the Best Smart-Connected Airport Operator in the Region. In the Go Global flagship, there are 3 main programs currently being implemented namely: Go International, Go Digital and Go Excellence.

Angkasa Pura II President Director Muhammad Awaluddin said the implementation of Flagship Go Global included managing airports abroad, strategic partnerships with world-class airport operators, and increasing employee competence to global standards.

"We are exploring markets for management and development in various countries such as Africa. At the moment we are also exploring opportunities to manage airports in the ASEAN region such as Thailand, "explained Muhammad Awaluddin.

Potential airports in Africa that have been and are being explored by Angkasa Pura II include, among others, Mauritius, Madagascar, Zanzibar, Tanzania, and Nigeria.

Aside from Africa, Angkasa Pura II also participated in the tender process for the management of Clark Airport in the Philippines in 2018.

Muhammad Awaluddin said that Angkasa Pura II is currently also looking for partners of world-class airport operators to develop and manage one of the airports under Angkasa Pura II.

"We are currently selecting a number of potential strategic partners who already have big names in the global airport industry to jointly with Angkasa Pura II develop and manage Kualanamu International Airport."

"Through cooperation with strategic partners, the development of Kualanamu Airport will be more massive and faster in making Kualanamu Airport an international airport hub in the western hemisphere of Indonesia," he said.

It is hoped that the collaboration of Angkasa Pura II with strategic partners at Kualanamu Airport can increase international and domestic passenger traffic to 20 million passengers in the next 5 years, financing terminal expansion and airport infrastructure, as well as global alliances with other world-class airlines and airports.

Related to improving employee competency, Angkasa Pura II currently has an Airport Learning Center as a candlestick crater of the talents in the airport sector.

In addition, Angkasa Pura II employees have the opportunity to get scholarships at domestic and foreign universities, in addition to attending various trainings held by global institutions in the world aviation industry such as Airport Council International (ACI), International Air Transport Association (IATA), and International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

Muhammad Awaluddin said Angkasa Pura II also invited all stakeholders in the aviation industry in Indonesia to work together and formulate appropriate strategies so that national aviation sector actors could take part in the global market.

"We must implement the concept of Indonesia Incoporated, we must work together so that national air transportation companies can go global," Muhammad Awaluddin explained.

Angkasa Pura II is currently the largest airport operator in Indonesia that manages 19 airports in the country, including Soekarno-Hatta which is one of the busiest airports in the world. In 2020, Angkasa Pura II will certainly manage 20 airports with the addition of General Besar Soedirman Airport in Purbalingga which is currently under construction.

As is known in 2018, Angkasa Pura II manages 16 airports with a number of passengers reaching 113 million passengers per year.
